StumbleUpon

UPDATE on 10/15/2012:

StumbleUpon is still a great social bookmarking site, but unfortunately they made a capital blunder in upgrading their site in a way that broke their algorithms in a bad way. It took them months to get it somewhat back on track, but it cost them many very active members. Here is the latest graph that clearly shows what I mean:

I am showing you the results from Sep 2011 - Sep 2012 in the US, because it shows the dramatic change even more. As you can see, here in the US StumbleUpon was the absolute #1 referrer of social media traffic, even beating Facebook! That has changed since they made the internal changes. Can you guess when they did this?

If you said Nov-Dec 2011 you are absolutely correct. Ever since they have been falling. Newcomer Pinterest is now a better source of traffic than StumbleUpon and YouTube is rivaling StumbleUpon also. And all self inflicted. Unbelievable, but true.

If you are looking for traffic from a social bookmarking site, StumbleUpon seems to be your best bet. StumbleUpon is second only to Facebook when it comes to traffic. They are even ahead of Twitter!

As a "byproduct" this bookmark is a link back to your page/site. As you know links are critical in achieving better rankings in the search engines. That is why social bookmarking has received a lot of interest from internet marketers.
One of the first social bookmarking sites was Digg, but there are thousands of them these days. It all depends on your niche which ones are best for a person. StumbleUpon has traditionally been a great traffic source, but Digg has now changed their approach and it seems like they will be of interest going forward also.
I realize that this is a very general answer, but I guess your question was also. If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask them here.

Comment by Karin Boode on September 19, 2010 at 11:40pm: Shari, that concept is great. Only you have to be very careful with that. Digg does not like it when you have to many reciprocal diggs.
I am actually part of a tribe (TSA) and that works great. We have about 140 members and we all syndicate each other. Each week you are assigned a group of 10 people and you have to syndicate those in your group at a minimum. You can do more of course. If you have the most syndications for the week, everybody has to syndicate you in the following week. You can find them at http://TSAMastery.com if you are interested. There is NO fee.

However, if you are new to StumbleUpon, please do not Stumble me there. I have power users who do that for me, and it give my posts more oomph.

Comment by Karin Boode on September 15, 2010 at 12:43am: I use Diigo when I want to highlight certain areas of the article, but not for other purposes. Most of the time I try to combine social bookmarking with traffic and Diigo is not my first choice there.
I do know a few people who use Diigo exclusively. It all depends on your needs, I guess.
